Armed thugs have struck an innocent woman and hacked through a door with a machete during a horrifying crime spree.

Several victims have been left traumatised after coming face-to-face with a gang of violent, machete-wielding intruders.

The armed thugs, who were all wearing balaclavas and dark clothing, targeted homes in Perth's north at random, terrorising those inside.

During one break-in, a 31-year-old woman at home alone in her rental was struck to the face with the handle of a machete before the strangers stole her housemate's BMW.

"Violence of this nature is unacceptable and people being threatened in the safety of their home is something that will not be tolerated," Detective Constable Ciara Lydiate said.

A manhunt is ongoing to find the men involved in the shocking crime spree, which began when a Toyota Corolla was stolen from the suburb of Butler about 4.30am on Wednesday.

Two intruders broke into a home on Soham Wy before stealing a set of keys and driving away.

Just 10 minutes later, police were called to nearby Millom St in Butler when a garage door was rammed.

From there, men armed with machetes were able to get into the home where they hacked at a locked bedroom door and threatened a 24-year-old woman.

Her 20-year-old sister was in the next room.

"Luckily the cardboard was in the way and I don't think that they could push fully through to get at her," a friend told 7NEWS.

"(They were) threatening and screaming and asking questions."

The friend said the gang "had no mercy".

An hour later, three men targeted a property on Jutland Rise in Ocean Reef.

They attempted to break in before fleeing on foot.

Ten minutes later, four men broke into a home on Tarolinta Gdns, also in Ocean Reef.

They attacked the woman inside and stole her housemate's BMW 4 Series coupe.

"While inside the residence, one of the unknown males approached a female occupant and struck her with the machete handle," WA Police said.

"The victim sustained a laceration and superficial injuries."

She was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

Police believe the same gang carried out each attack, and think each home was targeted at random.

Rapid apprehension squad detectives are now desperate for information from the public to help chase them down.

Anyone who spots the cars should contact Crime Stoppers.

The Perth crime spree comes amid a wave of recent incidents involving machetes.

Police are investigating a shocking scrap in Melbourne, just four weeks after the state's ban on the weapons came into effect.

Two groups of men attacked one another in the car park at Broadmeadows Central about 5pm on Wednesday.

It occurred directly across the road from a machete bin where Victorians are meant to dump their weapons as part of the government's amnesty program.

Earlier this month, two young boys were allegedly stabbed to death while walking home from a local basketball game.

The boys were found with critical knife wounds in Cobblebank, in northwest Melbourne.

NSW Police, meanwhile, recently released vision of masked intruders armed with a gun, an axe, and a machete who allegedly stole from a home in Andrews Court.

The only resident, a 78-year-old man, was not injured.

A special investigation has also uncovered an alarming number of deadly weapons being smuggled into Sydney's emergency departments, with terrified staff discovering knives, machetes and even guns in what experts say is an unprecedented safety crisis.
