A chance for time off and relaxation before Labour Day weekend is right around the corner.

In Hamilton, the Civic Holiday on Monday, Aug. 4, honours city founder George Hamilton.

Most city services are closed for the holiday, while big box, grocery stores, pharmacies and department stores remain open, some at reduced hours.

Here is a list of what is open and closed on Monday.

Retail

Four Beer Stores will remain open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday: 282 Parkdale Ave. N., 1111 Barton St. E., 673 Upper James St. and 959 Fennell Ave. E.

Three local LCBO stores are open: 233 Dundurn St. S. (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), 657 Upper James St., Unit 106 (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and 971 Fennell Ave. E. (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Visit lcbo.com to find the nearest open location.

Most grocery stores, department stores and chain pharmacies like Walmart and Shoppers Drug Mart are open on Monday. Some may operate at reduced hours. Major shopping centres are open, including CF Lime Ridge (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Eastgate Square (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Burlington's Mapleview Centre (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Government offices

Hamilton's five Service Ontario outlets are closed on Monday. Service Canada outlets are also closed for the Aug. 4 holiday.

The Provincial Offences administration office at 50 Main St. E. is closed Monday.

All City of Hamilton administrative offices are closed for the Civic Holiday. For emergencies involving roads, water mains, sewer systems and health and safety issues, call 905-546-2489.

Municipal Service Centres, the housing services office at 350 King St. E. and the licensing and bylaw service counter at 330 Wentworth St. N. are closed Aug. 4.

Transit

On Monday, HSR buses will run on a Sunday service schedule, with the last trips leaving from downtown at around midnight.

The HSR customer service centre at 36 Hunter St. E. is closed on Monday. For assistance, call 905-546-2489 between 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The DARTS service will operate on holiday hours on Monday. All subscription trips, except dialysis trips, are cancelled. If passengers need to travel on Monday, reservations must be made in advance.

Garbage and recycling

There's no garbage, recycling, yard waste or scheduled bulk garbage pickup on Monday. Pickup will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week. Community recycling centres are closed on Monday.

All Hamilton Public Library branches are closed on Sunday and for Monday's holiday. Visit the virtual branch at hpl.ca.

Recreation

All City of Hamilton recreation centres and arenas are closed Monday, but outdoor pools will remain open for regular hours on Aug. 4.

Animal Services

The City of Hamilton Animal Services office counter and shelter are closed on Monday. For animal-related emergencies, call dispatch at 905-546-2489. For found animals at the shelter, visit hamilton.ca/foundpets.

Museums and other closures

Hamilton Civic Museums are closed on Monday. The Gage Park Tropical Greenhouse and Hamilton Farmers' Market are also closed.

Hamilton's Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (9280 Airport Rd., Mount Hope) is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Niagara Falls roads

On Saturday and Sunday starting at 7 p.m., the Niagara River Parkway closes to vehicles from Clifton Hill to Fraser Hill, with a full closure at 8 p.m.

Clifton Hill between Victoria Avenue and Falls Avenue closes at 7 p.m., with a full closure by 8 p.m.

The roads reopen to traffic by 1 a.m., following fireworks.
