Obuasi helicopter crash: Kotoko mourns Dr Boamah, one other fan in national tragedy

Ghana continues to grieve after a devastating helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two cabinet ministers.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The Ghana Armed Forces' Z-9 aircraft was en route to Obuasi, carrying a government delegation scheduled to attend an event focused on combating illegal mining.

Among the passengers were Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Dr Murtala Mohammed, who served as the Environment Minister.

The crash cut short their mission and lives, sending shockwaves across the country.

Following the crash, a high-level government team led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and Sports Minister Kofi Adams travelled to the Eastern Region.

Their visit to Koforidua was to officially inform the family of Dr Omane Boamah about his passing.

The sombre atmosphere reflected the nation's collective heartbreak.

As the news spread, the country was plunged into mourning. Tributes came in from political figures, civil society groups, and everyday citizens.

One of the most heartfelt messages came from Kumasi Asante Kotoko, a club dear to the hearts of two of the victims. Taking to social media, the club wrote:

"Asante Kotoko SC mourns the tragic loss of our cherished fans, Dr. Omane Boamah and former KMA boss Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and six others in today's Akrofuom plane crash. We extend our deepest condolences to their families and the nation. May their souls rest in peace."

Both Dr Boamah and Dr Samuel Sarpong were known admirers of the Porcupine Warriors, making Kotoko's message a deeply personal one.

Among the many heartfelt tributes was one from a respected football administrator who joined the nation in mourning the loss of prominent figures.

He warmly remembered Dr Omane Boamah's significant impact on Ghanaian football, especially his involvement in the rescue operations during the harrowing May 9 stadium tragedy in 2001.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning beginning Thursday, August 7, 2025, per Africa News.

In addition, all national flags are to be flown at half-mast as the country comes to terms with the painful loss.

Authorities have commenced investigations to determine what caused the aircraft to crash, Al Jazeera reports.

Widely admired for his dedication to Ghanaian football, he was a regular presence at local matches and sporting events, offering visible support to clubs across the country.
