Ohio State QB commit Brady Edmunds returns to Columbus to prove he belongs

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It was roughly a year ago when four-star quarterback Brady Edmunds committed to Ohio State.

He received his offer after a one-day camp in June, and while he didn't eventually commit until December, he knew when he got the offer that Columbus was the place for him.

But things are different now -- in a good way.

He's a year older, and is about to enter his junior season at Huntington Beach in California. The offensive coordinator he committed to is in the NFL once again. The head coach he pledged to is now a national champion.

And with a commitment in-hand, Edmunds is still out to prove himself. Last year, it was to earn an offer. This year, it's to prove he belongs at Ohio State.

"If it's not I'm trying to earn an offer, it's i'm trying to show that I'm as good as you think I am," he said Thursday. "I feel like I've got to prove that."

Edmunds, the No. 67 overall prospect and No. 6 quarterback in the 247Sports composite rankings, was on campus for a camp Thursday and will stay through the weekend to help recruit for Ohio State. He'll then attend a camp on Monday and Tuesday, before heading back to California.

"I felt really good, kind of just competing with the guys and moreso I think the coaching wise, like coach (Ryan) Day and (quarterbacks) coach (Billy) Fessler watched me every single rep, talking me through things," he said. "I was getting pulled aside, just one-on-one coaching with coach Day, so that was awesome."

He re-iterated his growth process as something he can continually work on -- especially because he's only finishing up his sophomore year of high school. He's still about 21 months away from coming to Ohio State.

"It doesn't matter how good I am, or how good people think I am," Edmunds said. "There's always things to improve on."

Edmunds has made the trip to Ohio State a handful of times, but he has to make each trip to The Buckeye State count since he lives in California.

"I think it's my fourth or fifth time or something like that, and I'm always here for a day-span," Edmunds said. "I don't have the opportunity that Tavien (St. Clair) had where he can be here every single weekend and stuff like that. So taking advantage of every single opportunity with coach Fessler in meetings, out here on the field, just every opportunity matters."

Now, those opportunities are different than they were a year ago.

He was still uncommitted and looking to find a home to play. The Buckeyes had no pledges in the 2027 class (now they have two) and he'd only played one season of high school football.

His trips now entail furthering relationships with coaches on staff, and

"I've had the relationship with coach Fessler and then when coach Kelly left, it kind of picked up even more," Edmunds said. "So I feel like in the last six months or so, I've gotten really, really close with him, family-wise, everything like that. So now my whole family's down here, so just the family aspect and everything like that."

He'll camp twice more in Columbus, with his brother, a rising freshman tight end, before heading back to California. He'll then return for Ohio State vs. Texas on Aug. 30 at Ohio Stadium.

"I feel like everybody in the building knows who you are, the good thing here is I feel like I'm still being recruited too," Edmunds said. "Let's not just be like, 'Okay, we got him.' I think I'm still being recruited."
