FLORENCE - This year's Fall Plant and Flower Festival at the Pee Dee State Farmers Market will be held Oct. 10-12.

TRISH DeHOND: How to pick a pumpkin and select the best mums

As the autumn leaves begin to show their colors, mums and pumpkins make their appearance at local garden centers and farmers markets. The beautiful, flowering chrysanthemums ("mums" for short) come in a wide range of colors from rustic earth tones to bright pastels.

The market will have the largest selection of pumpkins in the Pee Dee area. Visitors can shop for fall plants and flowers, along with home, yard, and garden décor and crafts from a variety of vendors.

The market is also stocked with local fall produce. Food vendors will be on hand throughout the festival, and Aloha Kitchen will be open and serving Hawaiian food during the festival.

TONY MELTON: Don't fall for these gardening mistakes

First, do not take the advice of the commercials telling you to fertilize your lawn in the fall. Fall fertilization containing nitrogen may kill your lawn.

In addition, South Carolina Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions regarding fall planting.

The three-day event runs Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Pee Dee State Farmers Market is located at 2513 W. Lucas St. in Florence.
