Lightning stops play in third Lions test

SYDNEY - The threat of lightning caused a lengthy delay of play early in the second half of the third test between Australia and the British & Irish Lions at Stadium Australia on Saturday.

Heavy rainfall had lashed down on the stadium throughout the first half but less than three minutes of play had been completed after the break when the players were called off the pitch and the lower tiers of the stands evacuated.

World Rugby guidance says players should be removed from the pitch when lightning strikes within six miles of the venue during a match and only return 30 minutes after the last strike is seen.

The Lions, who won the first two tests to clinch series honours, were trailing 8-0 when play was suspended. REUTERS
