The match, which was already being played under heavy rainfall throughout the first half, saw play halted less than three minutes after the second half began. The safety protocols required the lower tiers of the stands to be evacuated as well.

The Lions, who had already secured the series with victories in the first two tests, were trailing 8-0 before the game was suspended. World Rugby guidelines stipulate that players return to the pitch only 30 minutes after the last lightning strike is observed within a six-mile radius.
