Sam Warburton has urged Welsh rugby to throw the kitchen sink at Louis Rees-Zammit in an attempt to lure him back to Wales.

The 24-year-old is set to make a sensational return to rugby union after 18 months in the NFL and will be available to represent Wales once more this autumn. Rees-Zammit has yet to sign for any club but is likely to have a long line of suitors willing to spend big money to recruit the former Gloucester speedster.

Given the lowly state of Welsh rugby and the fact the Welsh Rugby Union are seriously considering cutting the number of professional clubs to two it seems unlikely Rees-Zammit would want to play his club rugby in his homeland.

But former Wales captain Warburton believes everything should be done to ensure the 24-year-old wing signs for a Welsh club. Rees-Zammit is reportedly set to join rugby's new breakaway league from 2026, should it come to fruition, but is looking to sign for a new club for this coming season in the next few days.

"Now whether he goes back to Wales to play rugby at club level remains to be seen, but it's tricky timing," Warburton told Sky Sports.

"There is uncertainty over what the club structure is going to be over the next 12 months in Wales.

"He is probably not 100% sure where he is going to play his club rugby either.

"But selfishly I'd love to see him back in Wales, it would be great for the game.

"Something like that would make a big statement in Welsh rugby - I'd be throwing the kitchen sink at him, realistically, within the means of the business.

"But I'm excited and I'm sure he will be some fireworks back to rugby union." Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free

Warburton is also adamant Rees-Zammit will walk back into the Wales team under new head coach Steve Tandy this autumn ahead of Test matches against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa.

Rees-Zammit will compete with the likes of Blair Murray, Tom Rogers, Josh Adams, Keelan Giles, Ellis Mee and Cam Winnett for a place in the Wales back three.

"For me, he goes straight back into the Wales team, he has an x factor, he is a box office player. Get the latest breaking Welsh rugby news stories sent straight to your inbox with our FREE daily newsletter. Sign up here.

"I was really excited when I saw the news, selfishly, because Welsh rugby is desperate to have its top talent back."
